Sacramento, CA – Just days after a 33-4 critical bipartisan vote on the California Senate Floor, the coalition backing SB 793, landmark legislation authored by State Senator Jerry Hill (D-San Mateo) to end the sale of all candy-flavored tobacco products across the state, including the original candy flavor: sweet minty menthol, today announced seven new Heroes for Healthy Kids. The legislators have decided to become co-authors and join 37 lawmakers who support essential policies that protect our kids from a harmful and potentially lifelong addiction to nicotine.
“We applaud the new co-authors who support life-saving legislation that would end the sale of flavored tobacco products in California. We welcome them to our growing coalition of health, youth, and community advocates,” said Annie Tegen, advocacy director, Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. “As youth use of e-cigarettes has increased 135% in the past two years alone, it is essential for California’s elected officials to stand up for their health and their lives against Big Tobacco’s playbook. These new co-authors’ bold leadership will help prevent our kids from getting hooked on candy-flavored tobacco products and pass SB 793 into law. These lawmakers are true heroes for kids.”
The public health coalition previously announced a TV, mail, and digital campaign acknowledging legislative champions who protect children’s health by standing up to the villainous Big Tobacco, and ultimately saving lives.
